Michael Tahaney, Beaufort Historic Site
In the heart of downtown Beaufort, the Beaufort Historic Site offers a window into the past, preserving homes and buildings that date back to the 1700s and 1800s. Established in 1960, the site was created by residents who recognized the importance of protecting the town’s heritage amid growth and development. Today, it stands as a vibrant gathering place where history comes alive through tours, events, and educational experiences.

Executive Director Michael Tahaney says tourism is essential to the site’s success and to the local economy. Summer has always brought visitors from across the state and country, but thanks to Crystal Coast Tourism Development Authority funding, the Historic Site can now expand marketing efforts and host events year-round.

These events do more than celebrate history — they fill the streets with life. Visitors enjoy the Historic Site, then spill into local restaurants, shops, galleries, and ice cream parlors, spreading the economic impact throughout Beaufort. The increased foot traffic and energy not only support local businesses but also fuel the site’s mission, funding exhibit updates and the revitalization of the Welcome and Visitor Center.

“When people gather here, the whole town feels it,” Michael says. “Tourism allows us to preserve our history, engage the community, and share Beaufort’s story with the world.”
